Experience

Mr. Burgula has qualified from Manipal University and obtained double Post Graduate degrees in Trauma and Orthopaedics Surgery from Southern India

He was exposed to Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) Techniques ( popularly known as MIPPO – Minimally Invasive percutaneous plate Osteosynthesis ) at a very early stage of Orthopaedic training and that led to undertake a dedicated first international fellowship in Orthopaedic Trauma under Mr. Hitendra Doshi and Prof Kong Kok Sun at National University Hospital under the auspices National University Health System, Singapore . This training ranged from the periarticular fracture fixation around the joints to complex pelvic acetabular fractures through MIS surgical approaches .Inherently these (MIS) principles and skills where enhanced in the integrated training with in Trauma & Orthopaedics in subsequent period in U.K and intuitively extended in to the Spinal Surgery Fellowship training . This included Microscopic and Endoscopic skills with Percutaneous Pedicle Screws insertion and Cement augmentation of Vertebral body ( Kyphoplasty ) .

After Obtaining the Basic Spinal Surgery during the registrar training at Leicester , He has completed dedicated two Post CCT fellowships at Ipswich and Norwich for a Year each. These both Centre’s are recognised by the by The Royal college of surgeons of England and reputed for delivering high quality Spinal Surgery training. Mr. S Kaleel ( Ipswich ) and Mr. G Swamy ( Norwich ) have been running the prestigious Fellowship programs for undertaking comprehensive training included Minimally invasive, Complex degenerative, Trauma, Cancer and Deformity in Adult and Paediatrics Spines affecting Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar Sacral regions in the Spine . This program is one of the oldest and reputable training programs run under the tutelage of East Anglian Spine Society founded by then premiers in the field of Spinal surgery in the country and region ( Mr. Robert Crawford, Mr . David Sharpe and Mr. Robert Powell ).

He has gained advance training and undertake management of Simple Conditions such as Slipped disc or Spinal Stenosis to Complex Deformity such as Degenerative or Lytic Spondylolisthesis or Adult Degenerative Scoliosis . He was awarded finishing school Fellowship experience under the care Mr. R Lovell and Mr.S Bhagat Spinal Consultants at Ipswich Hospital prior to the appointment as Consultant Spinal Surgeon at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust in May 2023.

Trauma , Degenerative spinal conditions, spinal deformity, infections and cancers of the Spine, Spinal Cord Injury management.

Navigation and Robotic Spinal Surgery

In ever changing field of Health dynamics and exponential growth in AI technology , Navigation and Robotic Assisted Spinal Surgery is making a paradigm shift .With continued technical development and refining of the existing skills Mr. Burgula is preparing to incorporate these enabling technologies into his practices as when available. He believes learning new skills is a lifelong process and must need constant upgrading.

Teaching and Training

He is currently UG tutor for the Spine teaching for medical students from University of Nottingham and leads the Spinal Patient Safety and Enhanced recovery programs at Royal Derby Spinal Centre. He also undertakes teaching and training for Higher Specialist trainees for the East Midlands (North rotation) and Senior Spinal Fellow’s from British Association of Spinal Surgery across UK
