Coccydynia assessment and management

Coccydynia is pain in the coccyx or tailbone region, typically worsened by sitting or pressure on the lower spine. It may result from trauma, repetitive strain, childbirth, or idiopathic causes. Though usually self-limiting, some cases become chronic and require targeted management.

Symptoms

Patients commonly report localized pain at the tailbone, especially when sitting, standing from a seated position, or during bowel movements. The pain may be sharp or aching and is typically relieved by leaning forward or standing.

Surgery (coccygectomy or removal of the coccyx) is rarely needed but may be considered for persistent, disabling pain unresponsive to conservative therapy over several months.
